An oil seal is a circular seal made of flexible material that fits tightly around rotating shafts. The seal is made with a lip that is pressed against the rotating shaft by a spring. In addition, the fluid pressure provided by the design of the oil seal ensures extra sealing. Nowadays, PTFE oil seals are increasingly used. With this type of oil seal, no spring is applied and the flexibility of the material ensures the seal. In engine assemblies, oil seals are mainly found at the ends of the crankshaft and camshafts. They play a crucial role in maintaining engine lubrication and reducing the risk of wear due to contamination.
Installing oil seals requires precision, especially with PTFE variants. Keep them in their packaging until installation to prevent contamination and ensure that both the shaft and the sealing lip are perfectly clean and dry, free of grease or oil. Use the protective plastic sleeve or the appropriate installation tool. Carefully align the seal, and press it evenly into place. After installation, wait at least four hours before starting the engine to allow the seal to adjust to the shaft and ensure a proper and durable fit.
