More and more new cars have a timing chain so it makes sense to be aware of developments and recommendations around this product group. Together with the SWAG brand, we look at several cases of timing chains in TSi and BMW engines in this blog. We also provide advice when it comes to maintaining and preventing defects and wear.
Some products have sometimes been technically changed or improved to prevent previous problems. Together with the specialists from SWAG, Wilmink Engine Parts describes some of the cases here.
Applications: Various models from Audi, Škoda, Seat and VW
A common problem with these engines is the elongation of the timing chain due to wear, which can cause the chain to jump.
Symptoms of the problem are a rattling noise and, in extreme cases, this can lead to loss of power, engine stalling and the engine control light coming on. This as a result of camshaft timing lapses, which can lead to serious engine damage.
The manufacturer has introduced a reinforced version of this chain to address this problem. However, there can still be a rattling noise in the first five seconds after start-up, which mainly occurs in older engines with a high mileage. Engines after 2011 include an adjusted (longer) chain guide, an improved chain tensioner, gears with an improved design and an elongated timing chain. These changes solved the above problem.
Wilmink Engine Parts offers, for example, various SWAG timing kits including a complete package with no date restriction. For best results, we recommend replacing all components in the package for optimal performance of your timing system.

Applications: Various models from Audi, Škoda, Seat and VW
Due to an error in production at the OE manufacturer, small burrs appeared on the edges of the chain links causing premature wear on the chains.
Adjustments were also made to the variable camshaft timing gear. When the engine is started after a long time, a rattling noise may occur. The manufacturer has said that it is important to replace the gear in this case! The new part can be ordered by quoting number WG1267200.

Several BMW engines also have the problem of a high-pitched noise near the oil pump; as the rpm increase, so does the frequency.
This is because the gears of the oil pump chains are worn. The oil pump drive and timing chain kit should be replaced according to the factory specifications along with a filter and new oil. The same applies to Volkswagen engines.

As with any repair job, it is important to get to the root cause before fixing anything. Damage often looks the same, but causes can be different. Examples of causes include:
Not all chain drive components have been replaced;
The intervals of oil changes have not been followed;
Incorrect engine oil or mix of different engine oils;
Short distances resulting in a condensation or fuel level that is too high;
Oil coking;
Incorrect oil pressure;
Wear due to material degradation.
It is very important to prevent these problems by ensuring correct and timely maintenance. A timing chain should be replaced at the prescribed interval or earlier in case of noises due to premature wear as described above. The factory intervals for oil are often long, for example. as much as 30,000 or 35,000 km. We therefore recommend changing it at least once a year or every 15,000 to 20,000 km (at most) to avoid additional wear.
In addition, check that the chain still has the correct tension when disassembling the engine. A chain that is too slack can cause major damage to your vehicle. Incorrect engine oil, failure to observe the interval, incorrect driving behaviour and poor quality of used parts can cause premature chain wear. It is therefore recommended that the chain be replaced at all times after disassembly to prevent any further damage and other problems.
