Problems with leaks? Elring sealants are the solution! The wide range of liquid gaskets has changed in recent times and offers many possibilities for sealing in installations and during overhauls. In this blog you will read more about the different seals, changes in products and how these miracle products can help you at the workplace.
With 14 different types of sealants, Elring has a wide range of products to make a success of overhaul jobs and repair work. The range of liquid gaskets consists of three different series: Dirko™, the anaerobic seals and Curil™.
The products in the Dirko™ series are silicone-based and can withstand high temperatures. The humidity in the air causes a reaction which turns the sealant into silicone. The product then provides good, lasting resilience. It can be used on the usual metals, cast iron, plastics (except for PE, PP and PTFE) and glass.
Apart from the difference in colour, most of the products in the Dirko™ range are the same in terms of characteristics, except for the Dirko™ transparent. The transparent version can withstand lower temperatures (180°C) compared to the Dirko™ HT (red) which can even be used up to 315°C.
Non-hazardous, dissolving and oil resistant: Elring's anaerobic sealants offer the perfect solution for surface sealing with a narrow joint or for sealing a thread. Two major advantages of these products are their short curing time and the absence of hazardous substances.
Curil is a non-hardening liquid gasket that remains permanently plastic. No waiting time is required after application, which makes it highly suitable for sealing surfaces such as flange joints. Curil™ can be applied to all metal-to-metal and plastic surfaces (including PE, PP, PTFE) and materials that release plasticisers (e.g. PE, PP, PTFE). EPDM, APTK, neoprene, butyl, insulating layers and foam)
This product group has been updated since last year and we would like to tell you more about it!
The new Curil™ T2 has replaced several products in the Curil™ range. This can sometimes cause confusion which is why we are clarifying it for you now. Whereas Curil™ T and Curil™ K2 were previously on the order list, both products have now been replaced by Curil™ T2.
A few advantages of this renewed product are:
The ordinary Curil™ has also been replaced by the El-Liq 74. This product can be used for metal-to-metal applications.
The replacement for the usual Curil™. The El-Liq 74 is a lightweight and non-hazardous seal that is perfect for fans of the Curil™ and who want to use it for metal-to-metal seals. This agent is also highly suitable for metal housings and pumps.

We now know under what conditions these sealants are suitable, but for what jobs can they be used? We have listed three examples for you, with the different products of Elring being tested in practice.
The old sealant must be removed before application. Then the surface must be cleaned with a cloth and ideally with isopropyl alcohol or brake cleaner. The Dirko™ HT (red) can be used on usual metals, cast iron, plastics (except for PE, PP and PTFE) and glass. It is also ideal for seals up to 2.00 mm.
In the video below the Dirko™ HT (red) is used together with an Elring gasket (WG1888199) to install the sump pan of the Mercedes-Benz OM 471.
Besides this example, the Dirko™ HT (red) can be used for many other applications such as the valve cover, water pump and oil pump, etc. Not for use in contact with fuels, for which we recommend Curil T2, El-Liq 73 and El-Liq 74.
Dirko™ HT (red) can be ordered with number WG2059068 from our specialists or at the webshop.
As with other sealants it is important to degrease the sealing area. This seal only works on metal and not on other materials such as plastic. The hardening process will not happen without a metal surface. The absence of air is also important to initiate the hardening process. The video below shows exactly how easy it is to apply the El-Liq 74.
In addition to water pumps, this agent is particularly suitable for metal housings. The El-Liq 74 is resistant to mineral oils (including additives), synthetic oils, lubricating grease, fuels, organic solvents and coolant additives and cold/hot water.
The El-Liq 74 can be ordered using number WG2088053 from the webshop or from our specialists.
Before installing and using Curil™ T2, the surface should be cleaned and degreased as for other seals. As previously discussed, Curil™ T2 can be used on all plastic surfaces (including PE, PP, PTFE) and materials that release plasticisers. The product is also resistant to coolants, fuels (both diesel and petrol), lubricating grease, cold/hot water, salt water, detergents, weak acids and alkalis.
Elring seals are also often the perfect tool for vintage cars and in the video below we see how the Curil™ T2 helps to repair an oil leak in a Volkswagen T2.
In addition to this example, the sealant can also be applied to various other engine parts that need to be simply disassembled, cleaned and sealed. Examples are: oil sumps, water pumps, oil pumps, various housings, etc.
The Curil™ T2 can be ordered from our webshop or from our specialists with number WG2139276.
