To be prepared for the summer, the engine cooling system needs to be in top condition. Wilmink is happy to lend you a hand together with the products from Dutch company NRF.
The manufacturer has been producing cooling products for automotive, marine and industrial applications in the Low Countries since 1927. The brand is primarily known for supplying radiators, but today has a wide range of products for engine cooling. These high quality products are manufactured and delivered to customers worldwide.
In this blog we zoom in on a selection of the most popular parts when it comes to engine cooling. We look at the purpose of the part, its maintenance and the most common problems. We also discuss why NRF stands out from the other brands.
The radiator is usually located behind the front bumper and the grille. The component ensures that the heat from the coolant is released to the outside air to cool the engine.
Radiator doors are made of thin aluminium to absorb and dissipate heat and have small fins to enhance this heat transfer.
After a certain time the aluminium of a radiator may deteriorate and cause the part to leak. Stone chippings are also a frequent cause of damage, as aluminium can be very fragile.
In case of such a leak or defect a radiator should always be replaced. When it is installed, the cooling hoses should also be checked and replaced if necessary.
Maintenance and (correct) cleaning of this component are also important for the proper working of the cooling system. As with the rest of the cooling system, it is also important to check the coolant level and top it up in good time.
NRF is not called the Nederlandse Radiateuren Fabriek (Netherlands Radiator Door Factory) for no reason. The company still produces its own radiators which have to pass an extensive test before being introduced to the market. During an extensive testing process in the development phase, the cooling capacity, specifications and applicability of the product are examined.
There is also a radiator for every application, as the brand has a range of more than 2,200 radiators for applications such as cars, trucks and agricultural vehicles. This number is not the limit, as there are always new innovations and developments in this product group to always offer more.
In addition to the common aluminium radiators, NRF also offers radiators in copper/brass. All radiators are mechanically assembled and soldered and come in different versions.
Some cars have an external oil cooler to control the temperature. The oil cooler is for cooling engine oil, gearbox oil or sometimes the differential. Hot oil is pumped to the component where it is cooled and then goes to the sump. Then the oil is pumped around the engine again.
Because oil coolers are mounted low down, they can be damaged fairly quickly for example by stone chippings. Leakage is also a problem that occurs more often.
To prevent leakage it is important to replace the oil cooler in good time. Further than that, an oil cooler requires little maintenance.
Oil coolers are developed and produced by NRF itself and are available for cooling engine and transmission oil. NRF's range has some 250 oil coolers for various applications, which is continually being expanded.
The compressed air from the turbo or compressor is cooled by an intercooler before it enters the engine. The filling rate goes up, and with it the efficiency and power of the engine. The intercooler is often mounted just behind the front bumper under the radiator.
