Step 1: What type of gasket for my engine block?

The range of gaskets consists of three different types: classic, modern and performance gaskets. Each gasket is better suited to a different type of application. Our specialists will be happy to explain which gasket fits your engine block.

Classic head gaskets

The 'classics' are the gaskets you may be familiar with from the past. These are fibre gaskets, often reinforced with a metal insert.
Advantages of classic (or conventional) head gaskets are:

• Due to the gasket's soft material, it easily catches any irregularities in the fitting surfaces;
  
• The metal fire rings increase compression and thermal protection;
• Silicone screen printing ensures an extra reliable seal of the oil and cooling channels.

Modern engines are delivering more and more power, and with higher temperatures, this type of gasket is no longer widely used. The modern gasket, or MLS gasket, is more common today. However, the classic head gasket will still serve older engines for many years to come.

Modern head gaskets

As discussed earlier, the modern metal layer (MLS) head gasket is the most common in today's newer engines. New developments, such as smaller cylinder capacity with high power, selective cylinder deactivation and hybrid technology, demand more and more from head gaskets, which is why the MLS head gasket was born.

Advantages of modern head gaskets are:

• Better resistance to higher temperatures and ignition pressures;
• Different layers and technologies provide improved fluid sealing and fit;
• Also, improved traction, fuel management and reduced emissions.
  

A disadvantage is that the finish of the fitting surfaces needs to be much more precise, compared to a conventional gasket.

Performance head gaskets

Performance applications require a completely different level of gaskets, as these engines demand more than the usual. Two types of gaskets are actually used for these applications: metal layer head gaskets and cut ring head gaskets.

Metal layer head gaskets

These gaskets are used for the most contemporary, current engines, but for performance, other technologies are also used in the metal layers. There are the Multi Layer Steel gaskets, also called MLS gaskets, which meet higher requirements. In addition, there are even more elaborate versions with, for example, an extra layer for higher loads, coatings for high temperatures or an HP Shim Layer. Gaskets can also be custom made to add the best materials, size and details to your head gasket.

Cut ring head gaskets

We also offer cut ring head gaskets for performance professionals. These gaskets can withstand very high pressure and have great sealing power. However, the cylinder head must be flattened on assembly due to the notched cut rings.

Step 3: How do I install a cylinder head gasket?

After ordering your parts, we are also happy to give you tips around installation. Below you will find a step-by-step plan, drawn up by our specialists together with information from our suppliers. This step-by-step plan is very important to follow for a correct installation. In addition, our specialists provide tips to make the installation as smooth as possible.

1. Carefully clean all surfaces of the engine block and cylinder head.
2. Also clean the bolt holes thoroughly and make sure no oil or water is present.
   Note! The result may be that although the bolts are tightened, the cylinder head is not actually tightened to correct specifications or full pressure is applied to the cylinder block.
   
3. Check the flatness in the length and width of the surface.
4. Make sure deformations, scratches, grooves or protrusions are removed.
   Note! Have this carried out by a specialist! Depending on the type of head gasket, the cylinder head should be smoothed extra smooth or slightly rougher.
   
5. Check and follow the dimensions and thicknesses as prescribed by the manufacturer.
   Note! For diesel engines, measure the piston overhang to choose the correct thickness of cylinder head gasket.
   
6. Carefully place the gasket on the engine block.
   Note! Do not use liquid sealant.
   
7. Fit the cylinder head without damaging the gasket.
8. Use a set of new (torque to yield) bolts.
9. Lubricate the threads and head of the bolt with a small amount of oil on a cloth.
10. If a washer is prescribed, lubricate it lightly between the washer and head.
11. Always follow the manufacturer's specific instructions for head bolt installation.
12. Use only the recommended anti-freeze and corrosion inhibitors.
