For owner Bert and first mechanic Gerrit, it really is about a passion. They have been able to make their hobby their work, they say. Their specialty: the big, American engines for muscle cars and stock car racing. But they don't shy away from a 30-year-old moped or an antique marine engine either. Thanks to more than 40 years of experience, Gerrit in particular knows almost everything about how engines work. Bert honestly admits that he still learns something new about engines and engine parts every day and "sometimes feels like an intern" in his own company. At LMR they gratefully make use of all the knowledge available at Wilmink's specialists.
Owner Bert de Vries explains, "We naturally like to stock the best aftermarket parts ourselves. Customers are often in a hurry. Sometimes they want to participate in a race the next week; the bike has to be in tip-top shape. Having everything in stock ourselves is not always possible. You also need to know what top suppliers like Clevite, CP-Carrillo and MAHLE Motorsport have to offer. In our industry, it's all about quality. Price sometimes comes second. We know by now what the differences are, what to look out for. And we are still learning every day. Wilmink Engine Parts likes to think along with us. That makes a huge difference.
There are not that many companies doing this specialized work. Bert has owned LMR since 2021 and has a background in engines for the food industry. He has been coming to LMR privately for years thanks to his passion for racing. Mechanic Gerrit has been patiently tinkering with powerful V8 engines at LMR for over 40 years; he has a slight preference for Chevrolet engines. Bert prefers to work on Dodge and Chrysler engines. During a thorough overhaul, LMR's professionals also make or improve parts themselves. Casting bearings, for example, or making their own cylinder liners for a special Weber V10 engine block. Whatever the problem, they find a solution at LMR. "Everything customers entrust to our care has to work perfectly again after an overhaul. Even if that means grinding a crankshaft for two hours."
Remarkably, at LMR they encourage younger mechanics to come up with creative solutions. "Once they master the machines in our modern workshop, we sometimes say: you can also learn from a mistake. Such a 'mistake' often produces yet another new solution or angle that you hadn't thought of before." Of course, LMR's customers can ultimately count on only the best, trouble-free end result. After a short recovery period at LMR, their engine is healthy, snappy, efficient and reliable again. That's what counts, especially in the fast-paced world of racing.
