The timing case cover shields the timing belt or timing chain so that no dirt or moisture enters and, in the case of a timing chain, the oil remains inside the block. This is because the timing chain is lubricated by the engine oil, while the timing belt is mounted dry and shielded from the engine oil. If this cover is defective it should be replaced by a new one, to be found in this category. When assembling, remember to install a new gasket or sealing washer, if necessary, to prevent leaks. The function of the timing belt is the same as that of the timing chain, to provide the drive and timing in the engine block. The timing belt has a replacement interval prescribed by the manufacturer (X kilometres / X years). To prevent any damage to the engine block, it is recommended not to exceed the interval specified by the manufacturer. The freewheel pulley forms the mechanical connection between the alternator and the crankshaft pulley. The pulley drives the alternator so that the battery is charged. The pulley protects the belt drive system by dampening engine vibrations for increased durability and comfort. The freewheel pulley can let the alternator rotor turn freely when the engine speed drops or when less energy is needed to generate power. This results in lower fuel consumption and therefore immediate lower CO2 emissions.
The reversing pulley guides the v-ribbed belt so that, among other things, the water pump, air conditioning pump and alternator are driven. The vibration damper is attached to the crankshaft and is also the v-ribbed belt pulley that powers the multi-belt. The vibration damper serves the purpose of damping torsional vibrations of the crankshaft. The vibration damper is a 'sandwich' of two metal parts with a rubber ring in between. One metal part is attached to the crankshaft and the other part serves as a flywheel. Because of the rubber ring in the middle, a limited amount of movement is possible, which slows down the vibration and dampens it. In addition, the vibration damper serves to suppress/reduce harmonic vibrations, such as at high speeds. Harmonic vibrations can cause a great deal of damage if the vibration damper is not in order.

The crankshaft gear is mounted on the front of the engine block, in line with the crankshaft. The crankshaft gear drives the timing chain / timing belt so that the camshafts are driven, which in turn ensures that the timing of the engine is correct. When replacing the crankshaft gear, it is advisable to also check/replace any other nearby parts, as a lot of dismantling is required for this task.
Camshaft sprockets are driven by the crankshaft gear by means of a timing chain or a timing belt. If it is damaged, it must be replaced, as otherwise serious engine damage may occur.
