An intercooler (or air cooler) is a heat exchanger used in turbocharged internal combustion engines. In a turbo engine, air is sucked in and sent to the intake manifold under pressure. Because of the pressure, more air and therefore oxygen enters the combustion chamber and more fuel can be injected. This allows the engine to deliver more power, and there is better combustion. There is one disadvantage to compressing this air, however; the air temperature increases. This changes the density of the air and results in a less complete combustion. As the air is sucked and cooled, it contracts, allowing a larger mass of air to be pumped into the combustion chamber. |
