Bearings are mechanical components that reduce friction and support rotational or linear movement between two parts. They allow one part (such as a shaft) to rotate or move smoothly relative to another part (such as a housing or a stationary object). Bearings are essential components in machinery, vehicles, industrial equipment, and consumer products that enable movement, reduce wear, and improve the lifespan and reliability of mechanical systems. How Do Bearings Work?
Bearings are designed to handle different types of loads such as radial (rotational) loads or axial loads where forces are absorbed and supported along the length of the shaft.
What Are the Types of Bearings Available?
At Wilmink Engine Parts, we specialize in engine parts. We sell different types of bearings, but we mainly focus on sliding bearings. The sliding bearings are used for example for the crankshaft and connecting rod. Sliding bearings contain no rotating parts and need oil to be lubricated in order to reduce frictional resistance. These are some of the many bearings we sell through our webshop:
- Crankshaft bearings. One bearing journal consists of two bearing halves, a lower bearing and an upper bearing. These are often equipped with a "position" cam, so that they are placed in the right place. Especially when using an oil hole in a bearing half, it is very important that it matches the supply hole in the engine. The supplied oil creates an oil film between the crankshafts and the bearing.
- Connecting rod bearings. Connecting rods also have a lower and an upper bearing, or a bearing on the rod side and a bearing on the cap side. The upper part is the most heavily loaded because it must withstand the movement of the piston and transfer this force to the Crankshaft. In many engines, the bearing half on the rod side is therefore reinforced. This can be done by different material compositions, the most well-known of which is the sputtering bearing.
- Camshaft bearings. Camshafts are used either without bearings, where they rotate directly in the cylinder heads, or with the use of camshaft bushes. The operation of these bearings is the same as any other plain bearing such as crankshaft bearings or big end bearings.
Besides these three popular bearings, we also have several other types in our range:
- Flange bearings (or axial bearings) as the name suggests, are designed to withstand axial forces. They are used in the crankshaft which is loaded in the axial direction when the clutch is depressed.
- Balance shaft bearings in an engine are used to compensate for vibrations in an engine. Balance shaft bearings are plain bearings that are often designed as sleeve bearings. This is a one-piece bearing, not two halves.
Bearings can be made of different materials, such as aluminum, bronze/lead bronze, and copper. In addition, multiple materials can also be used, such as tri-metal bearings, which contain three types of metal. Besides materials, there are a number of other options.
