A valve guide is an essential component of a combustion engine that ensures that the valves (intake and exhaust valves) can move up and down smoothly and accurately. They are located in the cylinder head and guide the valve stem (shaft). The valve guide ensures that the valve moves up and down in exactly the right line so that it closes properly against the valve seat. This is important for good compression and to prevent air or exhaust gases from leaking. The valve guide also helps to dissipate heat from the valve to the cylinder head, which is important for cooling the exhaust valve in particular. There is often a valve seal (valve stem rubber) around the valve stem. If the valve guide has too much play, oil can leak past the valve stem into the combustion chamber. This leads to oil consumption and blue smoke from the exhaust. |
