Gaskets are essential components used throughout vehicles to seal two or more parts together. When performing properly they block the flow of liquids (or gases) effectively. Gasket failures can cause damage to a vehicle's engine, fuel system, cooling system, and more. This is why it’s essential to replace worn gaskets in a vehicle and to choose well-made components. From the common rubber gasket seals to the rarer copper gaskets, or even steel or paper gaskets, each seal must be chosen for the right application. Choose gaskets based on the vehicle’s engine number or the (OE or product number if available) for the most reliable fit and performance. |
A gasket is made from compressible gasket material that creates a seal between multiple objects when compressed. There are countless gasket types to be aware of, and gasket seals are used heavily in vehicle engines. Along with a head gasket, most engines rely on dozens of others, including oil seals, the timing cover, the valve cover and more. Every engine repair depends on durable gaskets for longevity. Elring and Victor Reinz are both known for their quality gasket kits. Both solid gaskets and liquid gasket materials are available. Sealing compounds such as REINZOSIL or Dirko are often preferred for their superior leak protection.
A Head gasket is a gasket that provides the sealing between the cylinder head and the engine block. Cylinder head gaskets come in different types of material. For example, fiber gaskets and the increasingly common MLS (multi-layer steel) gaskets.
With the ever-increasing power in modern engines, the fiber gaskets are no longer adequate and are being used less and less.
The MLS gasket consists of several thin layers of steel gasket material which together provide a strong seal. A condition for this is that both the engine block and the cylinder head are absolutely flat and clean.
Head gasket prices vary based on the application and material chosen. To determine an exact price you must select the right gasket for your application using the vehicle’s engine number, or you can use the product number or OE-Number if they are available. Gaskets are affordable replacement parts and obtaining reliable gasket materials is more important than cost-savings. This is why we recommend you utilize well-known brands such as Elring and Victor Reinz. Full engine gasket kits are available, as well as individual replacement gaskets.
Before replacing head gaskets it’s important to look for a few specific blown head gasket symptoms, such as sweet-smelling smoking exhaust, brownish or milky white oil (as a cause of coolant in the oil), and rising pressure in the radiator or expansion tank and a rising temperature in the engine. Each of these symptoms suggests a head gasket replacement is necessary. With high-quality replacement parts skilled technicians take care of the replacement of your gasket.
A blown head gasket is a common problem that occurs when a small section of the gasket material fails, allowing air, oil, or coolant to travel where it shouldn’t. The symptoms from the previous chapter can be the result.
An engine head gasket forms a reliable seal between the cylinder heads and the engine block of the vehicle.
