The life of an internal combustion engine would be a lot more unpleasant and shorter without properly functioning seals. These ensure that fluids, such as oil and coolant, stay neatly in place. Not an easy job, even for experienced mechanics and overhaul specialists. Fortunately, there is Corteco!
Oil seals have changed quite a bit over the years. The principle has remained the same, the material and operation have undergone many innovations. From the traditional seal as we all know it with the spring around the sealing lip to PTFE seals. PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is a polymer with a shape memory, which ensures a perfect fit on the shaft. Even in extreme use, such as high oil temperatures and high speeds, it retains its shape. This eliminates the need for a spring. Another advantage: a larger contact surface, which in turn ensures significantly less wear. Also read our step-by-step plan for correct installation of this type of retaining ring. |
At Corteco, the aftermarket subsidiary of Freudenberg, in turn inventor of Simmering, OEM and developer of sealing and cabin filtration for all manufacturers worldwide, they have been immersing themselves in gaskets and seals, such as valve stem rubbers and retaining rings, for more than 170 years.
Corteco's very first oil seal, from 1929 (!) was named Simmerring when it was patented. Still a household name. The company's history goes back much further: there was a Freudenberg tannery as early as 1849. In 1925, Corte & Cosso Inc. was founded in Turin, Italy. Even then in collaboration with German inventor Carl Freudenberg. Renamed Corteco in the 1990s, with branches in Italy, Germany and the UK. Since the years, there were already links with two Japanese companies: the Nippon Oil Seal Company and Vilene, both in Tokyo.
Meanwhile, the world-famous Corteco, always easily recognised by its blue-red box, makes over 13,000 different seals. Freudenberg has also developed a state-of-the-art range of cassette seals for engines of the heavier type, also known as 'heavy duty', for example for buses, excavators, tractors and bulldozers.
In our range, mainly Corteco's engine-related seals are very popular, but we also supply seals for other applications, such as for a differential or wheel hub. Popular in our range include the following two PTFE crankshaft seals.
